News from the Cognitive Sociolinguistic Group

On June 29, 2016, Narcisse Torshizi and Magda Stroinska presented a paper “Mechanism of transition from patriotism to nationalism: Some insights from the views of homeland in 1st and 2nd generation Persians in Canada” at the 7th conference of the Formulaic Language Research Network at the University of Vilnius in Lithuania.

Magda Stroińska and Grażyna Drzazga (PhD 2013) will be presenting a paper “Polish Hejt: Hate Speech reexamined” at the East European Conference at Warsaw University, Poland in July 2016.

In August 2016, a number of graduate students from the Cognitive Sociolinguistics Group will be presenting papers at the meeting of the Linguistic Association of Canada and the United States (LACUS) at St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Narcisse Torshizi will be talking about “Homeland metaphors: dimensions of belonging in second generation Persians in Canada”; Alex Theodorou will present a paper” Can emotional words affect syntax? Eye movement evidence from globally ambiguous relative clause constructions.” Fareeha Rana will present a paper entitled “From gr8 to gr9: the processing cost of texting shortcuts and Internet abbreviations.” Magda Stroinska and Grażyna Drzazga will discuss linguistic aggression in a paper “Beyond Hate Speech: Polish Political Discourse about the Other.”
