The 2nd McMaster IPA Spelling Bee may have been a lot of fun and some free pizza but it was also a serious test of Phonetics, IPA, and the ability to hear, deconstruct and transcribe pretty difficult words from English, German, Polish and Bzhedukh, a West Circassian language. Many thanks to the McMaster Linguistic Society for the organization of the event and to Dr. Daniel Pape, Dr. John Colarusso and Professor Karen Tucker for judging the contest. And congratulations to the winners: First Place and a $100 gift card went to Connor Savory. Megan Karabin placed 2nd and Kathryn Law placed 3rd, both winning $50.00 gift cards. Well done! The first of the three rounds started with 15 participants. Six went to round 2 and 4 went to the finals. Let’s do it again in 2021!
