This course involves Team-Based Learning in the Active Learning Classroom. In this course, students will:
describe cognitive processes involved in speech perception, word recognition, and sentence comprehension
examine experimental methods from behavioural psychology for investigating language comprehension
interpret experimental data to investigate language comprehension
collaborate with a team of student peers to create an audio or video presentation about a topic in psycholinguistics
Textbooks, Materials & Fees:
Sedivy, Julie. (2019). Language in Mind, 2nd edition. Oxford University Press.
This is a new edition for this year, which may be purchased at the Campus Store. This textbook is also used for Ling 3C03 Child Language Acquisition in Winter 2020. It is also perfectly acceptable to use the 1st edition of the textbook, ISBN 978-0-87893-598-7, if you can obtain a used copy. The 1st edition is on reserve at Mills.
Method of Assessment:
5%: a small team assignment, completed in class Wednesday Sept 11
30%: two medium-sized team assignments, worth 15% each, completed in class Tuesday Sept 24 and Tuesday Nov 5
15%: an individual take-home test, assigned and completed Tuesday Oct 22.
25%: a team project, presented in class on Tuesday Nov 26 or Wednesday Nov 27
25%: an individual final exam, scheduled by the Registrar during the exam period
Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:
: If you are absent on the day of a team assignment and you submit an MSAF or other approved document (via your academic advisor in your home faculty), the assignment is excused and its weight is redistributed across the other components of the course. Without an MSAF or a note from your Dean's office, you earn 0 for the missed team assignment.
: If you submit an MSAF or other approved document (via your academic advisor in your home faculty) for an individual test, contact Dr. Anderson immediately to make arrangements for a revised submission time.
: Much of the work on a team project happens during class time. It is vital to attend class to collaborate with your team members. If for some reason it becomes impossible for you to fulfill your responsibility to your team members, consult Dr. Anderson as soon as possible to discuss the options.

You are expected to exhibit honesty and use ethical behaviour in all aspects of the learning process. Academic credentials you earn are rooted in principles of honesty and academic integrity.
Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. This behaviour can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignment, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads: "Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:
- Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
- Improper collaboration in group work.
- Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.
Email correspondence policy
It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student. Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.
Modification of course outlines
The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.
McMaster Student Absence Form (MSAF)
In the event of an absence for medical or other reasons, students should review and follow the Academic Regulation in the Undergraduate Calendar Requests for Relief for Missed Academic Term Work.
