This is an introductory course for students who have little or no prior background in writing, speaking, or understanding any dialect of the Chinese language to develop basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Practical oral and written exercises are used to provide a firm grammatical foundation for further study. By the end of term, student will be able to read and write about 300 Chinese characters, and will be able to carry on simple dialogues on certain daily topics.

Academic dishonesty is to knowingly act or fail to act in a way that results or could result in unearned academic credit or advantage. The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:
- Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
- Improper collaboration in group work.
- Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.
Email correspondence policy
It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student. Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.
Modification of course outlines
The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.

Academic Accommodation for Religious, Indigenous and Spiritual Observances

Other Course Information:
Absences: NO make-up tests/exams will be given, and NO late assignment will be accepted either, unless verification documentation (doctor’s note, etc.) is provided within one week. Students absent from class are responsible for obtaining missed notes from classmates. More than two absences will lower a final letter grade.
Class contacts: You should have at least 2 contact information of your classmates. In the case of absence of a class, please contact your classmate(s) for the materials you have missed.
Email policy: Please do not email the instructor with explanations for absences, simply bring the documentation to the next class if you have one. Emails about matters that have been clearly announced in class will not receive a reply.
