Course Objectives:

This course is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Russian. Students will learn the Cyrillic alphabet, some basic rules of pronunciation and the essentials of Russian grammar.

The students will learn the basics of Russian grammar and start forming their vocabulary. In class, the students will be given an opportunity to practice new grammatical concepts through oral and written drills. The new material will be also studied through the home assignments, including oral and written drills, reading exercises, and brief translations. The students will be expected to complete their assignment in the workbook and online. Some classes will include brief surprise tests based on the current material. They will count toward the participation grade.  

There will be bi-weekly quizzes on new vocabulary and grammar.

Method of Assessment:

20% - Participation (15% classwork + 5% surprise tests)

20%- Homework

30% - Quizzes

30% - Final Exam

Policy on Missed Work, Extensions, and Late Penalties:

The participation grade is based upon the overall assessment of the students’ in-class work, the timely submission of the homework, and attendance.  The homework will be divided between written assignments (due Tuesdays) and online drills (due Thursdays). The home assignments MUST be submitted on time. Late submissions will not be accepted.

The instructor and university reserve the right to modify elements of the course during the term.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:

  1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
  2. Improper collaboration in group work.
  3. Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.

Email correspondence policy

It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student.  Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.

Modification of course outlines

The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.
