Course Objectives:

This course is designed to expand German linguistic skills through practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking, promoting intercultural learning and international awareness. The course builds on and reinforces previously acquired German language skills and allows students to expand their communicative competence in the target language. By the end of this course successful students should be able to:

* correctly interpret spoken and written information in the target language.
* correctly identify the structures and vocabulary needed to communicate ideas, opinions and information effectively in the target language.
* accurately identify the appropriate use of language within a specific cultural context (i.e. greetings, farewells, colloquial expressions, etc.)

Method of Assessment:

Students will enhance their German language skills through integrated and interactive activities targeting reading, writing, listening and speaking practice. Success in this course will require regular attendance and full participation.

For each unit of work students will demonstrate their understanding and ability to use structures and vocabulary via a written and listening test. Students will also present an oral assignment on a topic related to each of the units of study in order to demonstrate their conversational skills.
This course includes a final exam. The final exam will include listening, speaking, reading and writing components.

Students are strongly encouraged to consult with the instructor in order to arrange alternative testing times if they need accommodation.

The following illustrates only three forms of academic dishonesty:

  1. Plagiarism, e.g. the submission of work that is not one’s own or for which other credit has been obtained.
  2. Improper collaboration in group work.
  3. Copying or using unauthorized aids in tests and examinations.

Email correspondence policy

It is the policy of the Faculty of Humanities that all email communication sent from students to instructors (including TAs), and from students to staff, must originate from each student’s own McMaster University email account. This policy protects confidentiality and confirms the identity of the student.  Instructors will delete emails that do not originate from a McMaster email account.

Modification of course outlines

The University reserves the right to change dates and/or deadlines etc. for any or all courses in the case of an emergency situation or labour disruption or civil unrest/disobedience, etc. If a modification becomes necessary, reasonable notice and communication with the students will be given with an explanation and the opportunity to comment on changes. Any significant changes should be made in consultation with the Department Chair.

Academic Accommodation for Religious, Indigenous and Spiritual Observances

Students requiring academic accommodation based on religion and spiritual observances should follow the procedures set out in the Course Calendar or by their respective Faculty. This course will cover Units 6-9 in the text.

For each unit, topics for the oral assignments will be suggested, but these topics may be modified after consultation with the instructor.
