About the Department of Linguistics & Languages
How did humans acquire language? How do language and communication function together? How do you learn and teach foreign languages more effectively?
We have two programs: Linguistics and Cognitive Science of Language. Linguistics is the scientific study of human language: its structure, origin, evolution, and its uses in society. Cognitive Science of Language investigates how human capacities and brain structures allow efficient language communication.
At the Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University, world-class educators and researchers will prepare you for exciting future careers. Linguistics and Cognitive Science of Language are excellent platforms for further studies at the graduate level. Our graduates include speech language pathologists, teachers, data analysts, educational experts, language software programmers, and lawyers.
Our graduate program is interdisciplinary and includes faculty from Humanities, Science, and Health Sciences. The wide breadth of expertise within our Department means graduate students can optimize and tailor their learning experience around their own area of interest.
No matter what level of study, you will feel welcome in our friendly and supportive atmosphere where faculty members encourage intellectual interactions among faculty and students to provide a meaningful educational experience.
